Upcycling Food Scraps

Minimize food waste by upcycling your food scrapsUpcycling your food scraps will minimize food waste.

Upcycling your food scraps is an important issue you can bring into your daily habits. By finding creative ways to upcycle the food scraps you typically toss, you will reduce your food waste and utilize every nutrient. You will also save money.

Here are 5 creative ideas I use to turn my food scraps into something more:

  1. Make your own bone broth. You can use scraps from a roasted or rotisserie chicken. Put it in your slow cooker for a simple, hands-off way to make it, then use it as the base for your soups and sauces.
  2. Turn leftover greens into condiments. If you have beet greens or greens from any vegetable you would throw away, you can convert them into different condiments. Pesto and chimichurri are two sauces you can make from leftover greens.
  3. Freeze your wilted herbs. When your herbs start wilting, don’t throw them away. Instead, freeze them using ice cube trays. Cover them with olive oil, then use them to add more flavor to other dishes, such as, sauces, soups, or eggs.
  4. Save skins and stems from your vegetables. You can upcycle food scraps such as potato peels to make stews and soups. You can also make your own vegetable broth this way.
  5. Turn them into chips. Tough and ruddy food scraps like broccoli, kale, or cauliflower stems can have a new purpose as chips or fries. Thinly slice them, toss them with avocado oil and seasonings, then air or oven fry for a healthy snack.

These are just a few creative ideas to upcycle food scraps. Have some fun thinking of your own!
