A Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) measurement is a good foundation for any weight management program.
Your Resting Metabolic Rate represents the number of calories you need to do normal bodily functions, such as, breathing, while at rest. This accounts for 75% of your total metabolism, therefore
a very important factor to consider.
What are the benefits of knowing your Resting Metabolic Rate?
- It can screen for a slow metabolism which could explain frustrated attempts to lose weight in the past
- It can reveal changes in your metabolism during the weight loss process that can help trouble shoot a frustrating plateau
- Understanding your unique number can help you efficiently and effectively maintain your current weight and fitness level.
How does the test work?
During the test you relax in a chair and breathe into a small mouthpiece. In other words, it is a simple, non-invasive test. (see picture)
Every calorie a person consumes requires a fixed amount of oxygen to be changed to energy, so the machine analyzes the composition of your breath, thus determining your oxygen consumption. In just 10 minutes your RMR is measured.
Pre-testing protocol
In order to get the most accurate results, it is important to follow the standard protocol:
- Nothing to eat for 4 hours prior to test
- No exercise for 4 hours prior to test
- No caffeine or nicotine for 4 hours prior to test
A one-size-fits-all approach to reaching health goals is not optimal. Certainly, your Resting Metabolic Rate will provide a helpful guide to achieve your desired weight loss, maintenance, or even weight gain.
