Growing Fresh Herbs on Your Windowsill

Growing fresh herbs on your windowsill is an easy and practical way to add flavors to your meals.

Not only are these plants easy and practical, they are relatively low maintenance.

Tools you will need for growing fresh herbs

Before you start you will need to make sure you have the right tools. You will need pots at least 6-8 inches deep with good drainage holes. The best soil for herb growth is a light potting mix that contains compost or fertilizer. A watering can with a long spout is also essential to gently water plants. Finally, make sure your window provides plenty of sunshine because herbs need at least 5-6 hours of direct sunlight each day.

Here are the top three herbs to grow on your windowsill:

Basil

Basil is one of the most popular herbs used in cooking. It has a sweet, spicy flavor that pairs well with tomatoes, garlic, and other Italian-style dishes. When growing basil indoors, keep the soil moist by watering it regularly.

Parsley

Parsley is a versatile herb used fresh or dried in salads, sauces, and soups. The plant grows best when watered frequently so the soil stays moist but not soggy. To keep parsley from getting too leggy or woody, pinch off the leaves regularly, encouraging new growth.

Oregano

Oregano is another popular herb used in Mediterranean cuisine. Its flavor is slightly peppery with hints of balsam and lemon zest. This makes it great for adding depth to pasta dishes, marinades, and salads.

Other herbs and spices that are easy to grow indoors include turmeric, cinnamon, dill, and mint.

While providing delicious flavors for all kinds of dishes, scientists have also discovered that these herbs and spices actually provide natural healing properties.

There are an array of health benefits that can be found in your spice cabinet such as:
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Decreasing risk for cancers
  • Fighting bacteria
  • Soothing your digestive systems

I put together a small collection of recipes that use several of these herbs and spices. Grab it here…Enjoy the flavor and the health benefits!
